Uzbek kurash wrestling gaining popularity around the world

UzA, 7 September 2010, 13:03

International Kurash Association (IKA) marked 12 years since its creation on 6 September 1998 on the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.

Over these years, kurash has been gaining popularity around the world, with national kurash federations having opened in more than 100 countries.

According to IKA, its main goal is to make kurash one of the Olympic sports. At present, IKA and its members – Asian, European, Pan-American, African and Oceania kurash confederations – regularly organize world and continental tournaments.

IKA is planning a number of new activities to strengthen the status of kurash on the international scale. The association has applied to membership in SportAccord, which unites leading international sports federations. Membership in SportAccord will become another step to introduction of kurash in the list of the Olympic sports.
