On June 11, an international conference on “The role of youth in preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism” began in Tashkent.

The event is organized by the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan jointly with the Project Coordinator of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and the United Nations. It is being attended by delegations from Afghanistan, China, Germany, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, foreign experts, as well as senators, deputies, activists of the Union of Youth of Uzbekistan, scientists, journalists.

Political and legal framework for countering violent extremism and radicalism that lead to terrorism among youth, enhancing their role in this process, strengthening cooperation between the state and civil society, preventing propagation of such vices on the Internet and the mass media, as well as issues of strengthening interregional consent of Central Asian countries in the field of science, culture, sports in order to prevent the entry of representatives of the younger generation under the influence of those who are engaged in terrorism and violent extremism were discussed at the forum.

Uzbekistan considers the fight against extremism and radicalism as an important condition for ensuring global security, is a constant participant and initiator of this process.

As participants of the international conference noted, this forum opens wide opportunities for joint regional and international efforts in developing comprehensive measures on combating the factors that lead to terrorism among representatives of the younger generation.

In order to combat these factors, relevant decisions of the UN, OSCE and several other international organizations have been adopted. These documents provide for implementation of a large-scale international mechanism for combating the propaganda of terrorism. This, in turn, contributes to development of national action programs and development of youth policy.

The State Advisor to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan on youth issues – the Chairman of the Central Council of the Union of Youth of Uzbekistan Kakhramon Kuronboyev noted that young people go abroad for various objective and subjective reasons. Being in an alien environment with a foreign culture, as a result of migration, the generation falls under the influence of extremists. The main task is to establish constant contact with youth abroad, preventing them from falling under the influence of various dangerous groups. In such conditions, the struggle against various manifestations of violent extremism and radicalization becomes more important than ever.

At the third plenary session “Preventing violent extremism on the Internet and the mass media”, the media are called upon to promote interethnic harmony, the principle of religious tolerance, strengthening of the spirit of mutual respect, their position on combating all manifestations of hate propaganda.

Within the framework of the conference, a presentation of the information portal on combating extremism – stopterror.uz, created by the Center for Studying Regional Threats with the assistance of the OSCE was held. The winners of the regional stage of the competition “Youth of Central Asia against violent extremism” will be announced at the event.

Prospects of creating an International Association of youth of the region to prevent violent extremism and terrorism were also discussed at the meeting.
