Measures taken to stop use of pyrotechnicsUzA, 16 December 2009, 18:54 Every year in late December and early January numerous blasts of petards disturb the peace of the citizens, sometimes causing material damage or harm to people’s health. The law-enforcement, fire-fighting, customs and tax bodies of Uzbekistan are implementing a complex of measures to prevent smuggling of pyrotechnics to the country and its sale. Despite the ban, violators manage to illegally bring these products to the republic. According to the press service of the State Customs Committee, in November, a MAN truck was detained at Kamchik customs post in Namangan region with 143,400 items of pyrotechnics, brought to the country illegally. In another case, a woman was detained in Syrdarya region with 21 boxes containing over 600,000 pyrotechnic items. The respective agencies are taking measures to prevent accidents related to use of pyrotechnics. Wide awareness raising activities are being held at educational establishments, and markets are checked for the illegal sales. The main aim of these activities is to protect the health and safety of the people, especially children, and ensure that the holiday celebrations are held without accidents.
